... that the weekend preceding the 4th is just a "regular weekend", meaning two days long? No Monday off?

Most other Federal Holidays are on movable dates, giving us reason for Monday holidays.
Unfortunately, July 4th, is July 4th, and doesn't move on the calendar.

Well I used to work for a company that gave us the Monday b4 off if it fell mid-week. It was a fairly small company and we were all pretty big drinkers. We gave up the day after Thanksgiving for it by majority vote.
