tiger barbs are great if you just have other tiger barbs. they get kind of big for a 10 gallon.

a betta with some neons is a great 10 gallon tank. you might have some extra room for a couple guppies.

Platties are very hardy, easy fish that are great for first time aquariumist.

Guppies are also great though they breed a little faster than the platties.

Mollies are also a good choice.

Bettas wont mix with tiger barbs - they're to nipper. I also wouldn't do a betta with mollies though it should do good with guppies and platties.

Neons would also be a good choice but they are more sensitive than above mentioned fish. You might also look into other mild natured tetra but be sure you get at least 3, but 6 would be better. When schooling fish aren't provided a school they sometimes exhibit more aggression than they would other wise.

Ah one more thought! If you want to with with drawf cichlids you could do two females a male in a 10 gallon. They are neat but that would max you out since they can get up to about 4 inches.

Guppies, betta, and neon-type tetra's are all suitable. I've heard of guppies attracting aggression from the betta, though my experience wasn't like that - still, use caution with the mix. I keep a betta with a group of Cardinal's and a group of cory catfish without issues, and it's an easily maintained tank. Make sure you have plants (fake is fine), since all these fish are most secure and comfortable in a planted environment. Instead of a Betta you can also go with a dwarf Gourami.

Tiger barbs can be very feisty and get larger than many realize. I really don't recommend them in a 10 gallon. Also, you shouldn't mix them with a betta since they will very likely nip its fins to shreds.

Don't get Tiger Barbs, they get fairly big, aggressive, and they have to be kept in groups. You could keep a Betta, 3 Corries and 7+ Neon Tetras. If any fish die, make sure you replace them as soon as possible. Good luck! (any color variation of the Corries is fine).

P.S.: Wow, really? A Yellow Tang? Perfect, go right ahead and put a saltwater fish in with the freshwater fish already listed... (that was completely sarcastic if you were wondering). Don't listen to Ryguy, he has no idea what he is doing! (That last bit was completely serious.)

Bettas, neon tetras, and guppies would be a goooc choice. Tiger Barbs will bite any long-flowing fins, so a crown tail betta or guppy wouldn't be a wise choice. I'd go with 1 female betta, 7 neon tetras, and 2 guppies.

I'd do a small school of tetras, like glass, black, glowlite, black neon, gold, head & tail light, red eye, pristella, or red phantom.
Another good choice is cherry barbs and platies. If you really desire a "sweet" tank you need to go larger than 10 gallons, like 20 or more.

It depends if your tank is heated or not.

NOT HEATED: You can only get Goldfish and Bettas (but only one male Betta. You can get as many females as you want though)

HEATED: You can get whatever you think is nice, as long as they are not breeds that will fight. The pet store should be able to tell you which fish get along

~~~Just remember, you can only get 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. So if you have a 2 inch fish, that takes up 2 gallons of water. If you go over the limit they will most likely die.
try a yellow tang. they are very good looking, hardy, easy to take care of. don't get a betta. they are hardy, but if you want to mix them with other fish, it is much too slim of a selection.
