small number times 3= 7x3=21 (+2)=23 [large number]
23+7=30

see how i got it??

The sum of the two numbers is 30, as stated in your first question. I think you want to know what the two numbers are. So...heres how to figure out what the two numbers are:

L = larger number
S = smaller number

First...the problem tells us that: L + S = 30

Next..As stated in the question "The larger number is 2 more than 3 times the smaller" So..we make that into the following equation: L = 3S + 2 ("3S" is 3 multiplied by S)

Now... we have two equations and two unknowns. We also no what L is equal to in terms of S (L = 3S + 2). So now you can replace the L in the equation L + S = 30 with 3S + 2:

3S + 2 + S = 30 ..... Now solve for S
4S = 28
S = 7

Now...Knowing that S = 7 and L + S = 30:

L = 23

Answer: Larger number = 23; Smaller number = 7

Answer: The sum of two numbers is 30.

x = larger number
30 - x = smaller number

larger = 2 + 3(smaller)
x = 2 + 3(30 - x)
x = 2 + 90 - 3x
4x = 92
x = 23
and
30 - x = 7

The larger number is 23 and the smaller number is 7.

Are you sure you don't mean "What are the two numbers"? You already know that the sum = 30, since it's stated in the problem.

If x is the larger number and y is the smaller, your conditions are equivalent to the equations

x+y = 30
x = 3*y + 2

Solving for y, you get

(3*y + 2) + y = 30
4*y + 2 = 30
4*y = 28
y = 7

So x=23, y=7 is the solution.

THE ANS. IS 30
Also If you want to know HOW!!!
Let the numbers be x & y.

So x+y=30 ------(1)
& x=3y+2 ------(2)

subsituting for x in (1)
3y+2+y=30
Or 4y+2=30
Or 4y=30-2=28
or y=28/4=7

subsituting for y in (1)
x+7=30
Or x=30-7=23

Therby x=23 & y=7

Checking: IS 23=2+3*7
23=23
