Hi, my fish are a black moore and a gold fantail, and the fantail was "dead" in the tank this morning. It is alive now, and recently had a very long fece that took a little while to remove, and kept growing for a little while. The black moore seems fine. The fece was long and thin I believe. What is going wrong? Thank you for your time!

It sounds like your fish was constipated to be honest. That can cause the fish to have serious swimming problems and problems holding itself in the correct position in the tank.

You can help prevent the problem with a slight change in your fishes diet. Add some fresh veggies to their diet every so often. A few soft peas without the skin is good, as are anytime of green leafy veggies like spinach, mustard greens, turnip greens etc. Soften the greens slightly in the microwave or in boiling water (just a little soft, not cooked) and feed that to your fish. Many pet shops carry veggie clips to hold leafy vegetables in the tank. Try feeding something like this 1-2 times a week in place of their normal feeding for that time and it should prevent the problem from coming back. As a bonus the fish will love them and stay much more healthy!

It sounds like you have a goldfish that had a late night. Sometimes goldfish will sleep in a little. If your goldfish was on it's stomach and just reluctant to move when you tapped on the glass, it just means that your goldfish is used to you and was asleep and decided to stay that way for a little while longer(anh mom! 5 more minutes!!) However if your goldfish were laying on it's side then there might be a problem with swim bladder issues. As for the long fecal strand(eww) that is most likely ok. So long as it's dark beige to brown in color(it depends on what you are feeding him) If it starts coming out more of a white color, then that would be cause for concern that you are dealing with an internal parasite.
