One reason is that we effectively have a back door draft. We are extending tours of duty, instituting stop loss orders, and keeping National Guard Troops longer than we ever have previously. They also are dropping their standards on criminal records and a handful of other things.

The other reason is that a draft would institute some kind of shared sacrifice. There are I believe two members of Congress with children serving in the military. Many upper middle class people don't know anyone currently deployed. I don't. It's significiantly easier to support a war that won't cost you as an individual anything.

There are also Republicans like Hagel from NE who have called to reopen the draft for the same reasons.

I can only speculate. 1. They are afraid because the military is so predomninatly right leaning if they get too carried away we will have the first revolution since 1776. 2. If they have a draft there will be more liberals in the military and those hard core conservatives will be diluted to the point to where they don't have to fear #1. 3. They think military gets paid too much to intice volunteers. If they have a draft they can not raise the military pay and still have plenty of cannon fodder.
4. They cut the military too much and reaslise it will take a long time to build it back to a viable size to fight a two front war. 5. All the above.

Want some facts? The wayward and poor are the ones going into service. The rich are ignoring the call. Why should they go and take a chance when they have everything at home? Dad & Mom will take care of them. The working class doesn't have enuff to send kids to Harvard or Yale. They are looking for an education. And feel patriotic. Rich care less.

It's just a fast way to further in-slave young Americans.
Check the Constitution and see what it says about slavery.

Amendment XIII
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude.........shall exist withen the United States.....etc.

I'd be willing to bet money all those politicians voting for the draft don't even know that this is a part of the Constitution.....Except for Ron Paul!

A Vote For Ron Paul is a Vote For LIBERTY!!!

They want to reinstate the draft so that people who claim they are against the war will stand up and fight (I'm not sure if that is in the war or against the people who reinstated the immoral draft), I don't get it exactly seems counter intuitive

Because they foolishly believe that if we have the draft, then the rich kids will have to serve as well as the poor. Dumb asses, the rich have been getting out of serving since Greece and Rome. They think the rich kids won't get out today, give me a brake.

So war supporters would have to put their money where their mouth is or take the example given by Bush and Cheney;;;;;dodge the draft or defer.

Some do so that the Congress(wo)men who authorize war would be less willing to do so since their own daughters/sons lives would be put on the line.

Would it dilute it? Maybe, not sure.
