I have often asked myself that question. I do not believe that based on the strategies being employed we are fighting to win. Given this belief I don't believe all the troops we can muster will make a difference. The answer is pretty simple really. It will not work and when it doesn't they will ask for more troops saying we just didn't send enough last time. They will try to pluck the heart strings of American Patriots again and again. This pattern will continue until Bush leaves office. I do believe that no matter who the next president is that they will end this situation once and for all because public support for the action is gone.

If the troop search doesn't work ... correction, When the troop surge doesn't work
... the administration will say that it did work ... If FOX new airs any Iraq war activity at all, they will say how well it worked ... The conservative radio pundits will rant how well it worked in spite of Democratic resistance.
If an army general says it didn't work, the first thing the administration will do is check to see if his wife is a CIA undercover agent , and if so ... will expose her. The second thing they will do is rant at the generals liberal agenda.
If it is still determined that the surge didn't work, Tony Snow will chant "I don't know" 3048 times.
If it still is determined that the surge did not work, the administration will state ... "we did a fine and noble job ... it is the Iraqis who did not uphold their part of the bargain and caused the surge to fail"
All of the above are standard Republican operating procedure and a safe move amongst their base of supporters.

Look up Vietnam, surges on top of surges made no difference, the people of Iraq will never rest until the occupiers leave.
Reverse the situation would the American people tolerate an occupying force that installs a puppet regime in the white house?

I don't know, and the problem is that I don't think our President knows either. I really hope he has some brilliant plan that assures stabilizing Iraq's government and somehow stops the Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds from fighting (which has been going on long before we got there), but judging by his and Iraq's history - my guess is that that's highly unlikely...
When Saddam was taken out of power there was no plan (or if there was, it failed horribly) to control the Shiites and Sunnis, who, as I've heard, dislike each other. Saddam was able to keep them under control with brutality, however, the question needed to be asked, "How do WE keep them under control now?" Obviously, that question was not properly answered and now we have the mess that we're currently in - and I have no idea how one would fix that. One thing that does seem odd to me though - I don't know how you set up a stable government by fighting. Is Bush meeting with (Iraqi President) Talabani? What sort of diplomatic efforts are going on?

I don't think anyone knows. Usually the gov. won't speculate on anything either.
I do know that if we can't help Iraq get stabilized then their gov. will fall and they'll be a war torn country for many years to come. A terrorist hot bed too. Young people will be brainwashed and we'll have a whole generation of U.S. haters.
*I've heard people talks about "Plan B" but I don't think anyone has given details on what they're next move might be. During interviews they are always evasive. I guess they don't want to show their cards which makes sense. I think everyone would like to know more details but obviously they will just keep the avg person out of the loop

When the troop surge inevitably doesn't work, Bush will blame the Iraqi government for not meeting his demands and begin withdrawing troops.
He knows there's not a chance in hell any Republican could follow him into the White House as long as he continues to pretend we can 'win' this 'war'.

If the troop surge does not produce measurable results by the end of fall the withdrawal should begin.

The surge is working.
The real question is what is the surge working to do.
It is creating more targets for the insurgents to kill.
It is creating more terrorists than we are killing.
It is sustaining war profiteering.
