It is 10 years old. From time to time over the years we notice the food getting warm and discover the fan stopped.
Starting it by hand it will run and then apparently continue to run okay. It seems like it speeds up and slows down, too when you open the door or put the back cover tightly on.
We have cleaned thoroughly under the refrigerator and the entire compressor/fan area. The fan motor is sealed (no oil hole that i could see, anyway) i put a little oil around the shaft.
Is the fan faulty, or is there some other control sensor or something regulating the speed and operation of the fan?
I can easily replace the fan, but if it is controlled by some other electronic part or something thats malfunctioning i'd rather buy a new refrigerator.
What should i do?

A new fan motor is about $45.00. I took mine out two years ago, cleaned it with WD-40 and it has been running strong ever since. These are continuous run motors like in a bath room fan. They don't wear out often, they just get gummed up. They also don't have much power so it doesn't take much to slow or stop them.

Time for a new fan. You might get it to last a little longer by using compressed air to blow the dust and dirt out of it, but is it really worth the headache.

If it was something other than the fan motor, it wouldn't stay on after you start it by hand.

I would call a pro and ask for an analysis as to how much it would cost to restore it to useful condition, if more than 200, I would buy a new one.
