Thanks everyone, after looking at some of the comments I left that got thumbs down, I just wondered why. They were not offensive or abusive, just informative. I like Yahoo Answers and will continue to be fair to people when I can use the thumbs up and down.

Once you reach level 2 you will be able to rate others answers.

Any member can used the thumbs up thumbs down as long as you're not trying to do so on your own answers. They are to rate how you feel someone answered the question at hand. While some can be harsh, it is better than being reported which anyone can also do to your question or answers.

I believe you can rate answers once you get to level 2 (250 points). That means most people who are active in the community can use them and frequently do.
Having a thumbs down rating for bad answers is fine. Unfortunately, on topics like this one, politics, religion, anything dealing with controversial issues, many people use the thumbs improperly, based on whether they agree with the answer's viewpoint rather than with whether the question was answered. It's just something to deal with - there's no penalty for getting a thumbs down or even a bunch of them, so you just have to get a thick skin or avoid those forums.

It would be nice if you got points for giving a thumbs up/down. I really hate getting a thumbs down when i'm giving my own personal opinion! I agree some people are too harsh!

i get thumbs down too but i don't mind as long as i am voicing my opinion and answering the question the way i see it I'm OK with it.

thumbs up means you're did good or great thumbs down means bad or terrible. anyone can get it.people arent harsh its better to show it then say it
