How much does it cost to build my own home in Western MA?

Question

Just a ballpark guess as to what would it cost If I wanted to build my own home in Western MA. Assume I owned the land but I needed to clear the land, dig a foundation, build a 1800 (+/- 200) sq ft home (from a kit maybe) add a well and septic. Hiring contractors for most of the work.

I realize there are a millon things that could change the cost, but give me a range for what i have described. I'm looking to see if I think I can afford to do it.

well, reconsturction costs are about 120.00 per finished square foot, say, for builders grade everything, so, i would say $100-$120 per finnished square foot, that includes contractors overhead, permits and such, but this figure doesnt include the well, septic, electric from the road to the house.
so, when someone said 150,000 they are out of their minds.
unless you will be building it them selves, i say, min of 215,000

Even the most basic (barebones) ranches as you describe in my area (Wisconsin) are going for $175,000. That includes a mediocre lot which probably cost the builder $25-30K. So you can figure that the house itself will run $150K-$160K. Add to that the cost of clearing the land, well and septic. That can easily increase the base cost right back up to $175-185K. In Wisconsin, most contractors are not union scale. Since MA probably is, start adding more.

Frankly, in your case, I would not think that you are going to get by with much under $200K.

Whatever you said about the healthcare and politeness is right. But I doubt the education system after seeing the type of people that work in Canada and further people don't have a sense of humor.
