I have a 3yr old dutch rabbit and has been innoculted every year. He's been lying down all day and i though nothing of it. When i went to pick him up to give him a love he was alright, as soon as i put him down he ran but fell over and keeps doing it. He also keeps shaking.

Last week a ferret killed my 7mth old rex rabbit and my 2 young guinea pigs even though they were in a pen. Do you think someone may have poisoned my rabbit or is he just ill.

Rabbits can get scared very easily by sudden noises or sudden movements or sudden lacks of noise.

When rabbits get scared they run around the cage in circles. Often you will see their ears become totally erect and they may start stomping the cage. Their eyes will also look kind of bug-eyed. These are all signs they are nervous and scared.

The problem is that when they get scared and run around their cage they often run into the side of the cage and break their spinal chord. This paralyzes them from about the neck down. And normally when that is the case they tend to shake.

Something has probably scared your rabbit such as another animal. Normally the culprit is a dog or a raccoon, normally a dog.

Another possibility would be an inner ear infection where the rabbit turns it's head to the side or something like wry neck.

Often people mistake a rabbit with a broken spinal chord for an "epileptic attack". I have never in 25 years of raising thousands of rabbits EVER seen a rabbit have an epileptic attack.

You can take your rabbit to the vet. But I seriously doubt there is anything the veterinarian can do except put it to sleep.

Make sure to protect your rabbits from predators such as loose neighborhood dogs. Also, play a radio around your rabbits 24/7. It helps get them accustomed to noise so they don't frighten so easily.

Do NOT wait and take your bunny to the vet immediately, serious! Rabbit's often don't show signs of illness untill it's too late. Call your vet and bring the bunny in, behaviour like you describe is not normal at all.
Good luck.
