Their politics had nothing to do with it. Lincoln had to replace them because they kept losing and couldn't figure out how to win a battle.

In any case, the rebels were mostly Southern Democrats and in Virginia they kept beating the Union generals in the Army of the Potomac. That changed at Gettysburg under Meade, and later, with the appointment of General Grant.

Edit: You’re a little confused.

The Army of Virginia was Union but it operated only for a short time in 1862 under General Pope and was later merged into the Army of the Potomac. General Pope was a loyal Republican.

The Army of Northern Virginia was Confederate and fought against the Army of the Potomac which was Union.

No the problem was it seems like most of the most qualified generals out of the West Point classes before the war were southerners ie: Robert E. Lee. I definitely think Grant pulled some great battles together for the North and definitely was key to the victory but his record at West Point was not the greatest either. Interesting news today did someone see how much the former General and President's diamond encrusted sword went for at auction. I always heard he was rather poverty stricken towards the end of his life and if you saw the small home he came from (near Cincinnati) he was not from wealth as some West Pointers were, I bet he is turning over in his grave for that price and the way politics again is screwing up a war.

I could be completely wrong with this answer but I don't think AL had a problem with Commanders in the Army of Virginia because the Union (or Federalists) called it the Army of the Potomac.

AL had a problem with army commanders because they wouldn't follow his orders. Few wanted to fight the South because before the war they were all close friends.

As a military officer you are sworn to take orders from the commander and chief and it wasn't until generals were found from the wilderness that the C&C's orders were carried out. It took hard, calloused generals like 'The Butcher' Grant , 'Cump' Sherman and "Lil Phil' Sheridan before Union could turn the early successes of the South.

One of Lincoln's most prolific statements, in my opinion, was when he said, "If General McClellan does not want to use the army, I would like to borrow it for a time." Not long after, McClellan was fired and U.S. Grant was given his command. The rest is history. Grant sent Sherman on his march through Georgia and the Carolinas while he, Grant, descended upon Lee's army from Virginia. The political affiliation of the generals had nothing to do with it.

The main problem Lincoln had was that the best officers in the Union Army, were Southerners and they all resigned and went to the Confederacy...and the ones he had left were in many ways politicians and very poor military leaders...his "hero", Grant, only won because he had more men and supplies and out flanked the South at every opportunity...whenever they stood and fought the South held them...even the terrorist Sherman only won because of the sheer number of lives he threw at the South...if it had not been for the draft of immigrants...the North would not have had all those men...
