As An Englishman who is currently arriving in the USA on business, i feel i must ask this.
Most Americans seem ashamed of showing their mouths, is this because of what comes out of them?

Actually, it is a transference effect.
When you are present, there is a visceral reaction to opening one's mouth. There is a subtle fear that one could be infected when opening one's mouth in your presence.

You have seen very few Americans. I would say that less than 10% of us have mustaches. Some sport beards or some sort of facial hair and they can be included in that less than 10%. African-Americans are more likely to sport a mustache as are some Hispanics. In an environment where there are an abundance of either of these there may seem to be a plethera of mustaches but the population as a whole no.

Most Americans have moustaches because the proportion of American women having moustaches is much greater than the proportion in most countries.

Sidney, the moustache acts as a filter.
The filter is supposed to act as a screen to prevent tripe and bullshite being spouted from their mouths.
Unfortunately the filter does not work, as one can clearly appreciate.
I have heard they have to sent the moustaches back to China to have the fault rectified, until such a time we will, unfortunately, have to tolerate the same old bullshite!

My girlfriend won't shave hers off. I don't mind I kinda like it. Her sister wears hers handlebar style but Jane just likes hers pencil thin.
