I might read Debbie Macomber's Blossom St. series, so don't recommend that. I am currently reading her book Susannah's Garden and it's just ok. I wondered if anyone knew of any better authors who write stories having to do with knitting and female friendships.
I'd also like a good, easy book on the basics of knitting or if you know of any good websites on the basics.

No, eviltroll, I am not gay. I have had that nickname for awhile. I am a Christian female who didn't even know until recently what Puff can mean.

Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book - has everything from history of knitting, casting on, correcting mistakes and every kind of stitch. Well-illustrated and easy to follow. Expensive, but you can get it on Amazon for about $28 - and it may be the only book you need. A nice, little flip-top book to take along with all the main stitches is The Knitter's Companion by Vicki Square. It fits neatly in a small bag and is a great reference. Enjoy!
