I would need to know what specifications of any brand laptop that i choose that would be pertinent to this course of study

The computer that you have doesnt affect your design. I believe more in personal skills and abilities. If you have the best laptop and u dont have the creativity and the software to work on it, its nothing.
SO I;ll recommend that you get something within your financial strenght and upload the softwares that u need. I did the same thing in college and i was one of the best in my class, even with my windows based laptop. Its up to you.

Go with something that has 2GB RAM, a large enough hard drive to store all of your course work, a Pentium 4 HT or higher, and possibly a graphics processor.

the two that would best fit would be the HP 6500 and the new Dell 1520, both can be configured with a dedicated NV8400 graphic card and all the goodies.

The iMac is a desktop a macbook pro or hp pavilion dv9500t would be good.
