I find McAfee seriously inept, and prefer Norton/Symantec products, which are far more intense in their scans.
McAfee is moderatly reliable though, si if it shows you have a clean system you're probably safe.
My advice would be to do the following to try to speed up your system:
1. Delete any programs/applications/files you no longer need, as this will free up hard-drive space.
2. Check to see if your system can handle more RAM, and if so, how much, RAM is quite affordable these days, and more RAM is pretty much always a good thing.
3. Try to run as few applications at any one time as possible, note that Anti-Virus systems do slow down the speed at which programs work very slightly, but this is a small trade-off for computer security, I find.
4. Take your computer into a local PC specialist store, and ask them to do some general maintenance on the hardware and software, and to check it over to make sure it's running efficiently.
5. Run a Disk Cleanup and also check to see if you need to run the Disk Degragmenter, these can be found by clicking: START
Ideally you should run a Disk Cleanup at least once a week, but you should only run a Disk Defragment every other month, or only when you feel the need to, and when your computer advises you, (to find out if it's necessary, if you feel theneed to, click ANALYISE and let it check the drive that you're thinking of defragging), as defragging too often can do your PC more harm than good, as for Disk Cleanup, if anything, the more often you do this the better, be sure to check the relevant tick-boxes before clicking OK.
You might also want to look into upgrading your processor if your motherboard can handle it, Celeron D's are entering their retirement phase now, and most computers use Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processors, and with the advent of quad-core processors for the home market on the horizon, it may be something worth looking into.
Note, that if you do upgrade your processor, you may also need to increase your RAM, and possibly add another fan to your system, the more power your PC uses hardware wise, the hotter it will get, you might also need to upgrade the power unit too.
Depending on your systems capabilities and your budget, this can cost between about £50-£1,000.

Well If you are spyware free, I'll break down a couple things you can do get your computer working the way it was originally. If you using your laptop for normal stuff and not gaming. You got a good setup. You don't need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.
First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events has a key. and that key need your PC's resources. So, if you should clean this up. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.
2. Clear your Windows cache files, this your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space.
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig.
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",
click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"
Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs. Check the link to alter your virtual memory spec.
Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.

1 - Download a good spyware prevention tool to make sure you don't keep it - there are several great free tools out there - spybot and adaware are the most popular free tools
2 - If you remove spyware, many don't realize it still has the potential of remaining in your computer if you did not Turn Off your system restore before removing the spyware
3 - download CCleaner - CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space
4- Always do a Disc Cleanup and Defrag your computer Regularly. - My computer, Properties, Tools - At least weekly if you are a person who uses your computer frequently. It doesn't take a long time to defrag if one does it on a regular basis..
Try to avoid doing daily.

Do a full system scan with your McAfee and delete all your temporary internet files. Temporary internet files are files that are automatically saved on your computer when you go to any website...this takes A LOOOOOOOOT of room up on your comp.
To do this...
-go to your search tool on your computer (it is usually located when you click start, it should be one of the choices).
-Type in TEMPORARY INTERNET and whatever is on your computer with those words come up.
-A bunch of folders will come up with temporary internet, temporary resumes...etc etc...just click on the ones that are internet related and delete them.
-You will have to double click into the folder (sometimes it brings you to another folder, double click into that) and then press ctrl+A (this highlights all the files in that folder ) at the same time, right click your mouse and pick delete. A box will come up asking if you want to delete these, say yes. Keep doing this until all the temporary internet files are erases. You do not need these so you are not losing something valuable to you.
The worst part about spyware is that you have to have a totally different application for it to be detected. McAfee and Norton do not find spyware, it finds viruses and anything that can contain viruses.
Trust me...this stuff makes my laptop so slow...I do it once a week. Hopes this helps!!

Sweep your system for any spyware/adware that may be installed. Use either Spybot or Adaware. Also run your anti virus software. Be sure to update it first.
Next, go into the "msconfig" utility and remove the check from any and all programs that you do not wish to load with windows. To do this, click: Start/Run. In the Run box type "msconfig" without the quotes and then click "ok". In the "System Configuration Utility" click the "Startup" tab. Now uncheck anything that isn't pertinent. Make sure that you allow your anti virus and your firewall, if you use one, to boot with windows.

I suggest you download a few antispyware programs and see which one finds the most spyware. After that purchase a 1 year subscription and remove the spyware (most of the programs won't remove the spyware only if you purchase it).
There's a list of popular antispyware software here:

Ad-Aware and spybot search and destroy, install them and scan, remove everything they find. use system cleanup (not that it is much good in windows) then defrag the hard drive. if it is still running slow then start to get rid of some of the junk that most of us store on the computer, music, pictures, films and old files. it is also worth checking to see how much memory you have and maybe upgrading it. good luck.
