I'm looking to buy a helmet. Everytime i go into a shop they laugh at me and won't help me. I'm not sure they understand that the helmet really is for me and that i'm not just getting it for kicks. I was looking on-line but every site i went to they are $300+. Do you know of a place or site i could try?

What you're looking for is the maximum amount of protection that won't break the bank. Contrary to what others tell you, you can still get alot of protection for not that much money.

Do the research. Some materials absorb more impact energy than others. Look for good ventilation and good fit.

Even the $100 helmets will protect you almost as well as the more expensive models. The technology is more or less the same, so don't buy the hype about 'how much is your head worth'.

All serious motorcycle accidents where head injury is concerned, its not the helmet failing that caused injury/death, its impact trauma (severe concussion), or neck injury.

Not even the most expensive helmet can save you from a severe accident, but as long as the helmet is Snell approved, then its a good helmet (meets all minimum safety requirements) and will protect you in all but the most serious impacts.

I've done the research because I had to buy a helmet for myself a few years ago.

I just found a decent helmet for $108US at Ridegear that looks great and will do the job.

Remember, your best insurance against an accident is your brain. Ride safely and try to forsee as much as you can. Don't put yourself in a situation where you'll endanger your safety (or anyone elses).

Ride safe!

Have a look on ebay and you will see lots of helmets.

BUT ( BIG BUT)

You only got one head and you don't tend to function too good without it so:-

1) Only buy a helmet with the correct safety approved stickers for your country.
2) DO NOT buy a used helmet for various reasons. Ignoring the dirty head that might have been in it, the memory foam of a new helmet will take the shape of the first owner. It probably won't have any elasticity ( or whatever!) left in it to form to your shape so your head will not be properly secure. Also, you don't know if it has had any impact in the past that may have streesed and weakened it.
3) Make sure you get the correct size. Starting from the middle of your forehead ( where a hat band would normally sit) and measure round the crown of your head. Most helmets sized in cms. I have a 56cm head so I will need a small to medium( depending on the manufacturer)
4) Decide whether you need an open face, full face or flip up type helmet. All have pros and cons but generally speaking scooter and chopper type riders seem to prefer open face , sport bike riders prefer full face and many long distance cruisers ( also couriers and police) prefer flip fronts.

So, chose carefully don't just go for cheap.
Having said that, a very good quality flip up like the Caberg Justissimo is only around $300 and the new ones come Bluetooth ready. My full face helmet (HJC) was only $120 so you won't break the bank buying a new helmet.

Don't buy a motorcycle helmet online! You need to buy it in person because it has to fit right. If you buy online and it doesn't fit, they won't let you return it. Also, NEVER buy a used helmet. If a helmet is dropped once, it could permanently compromise the protectivness of it. Go to a motorcycle dealer and buy a helmet. You probably won't find one for under $200 if you want a full face.

If you think 300 dollars is a lot of money to protect your head then you are crazy. I would no sooner wear a 300 buck crash helmet than I would chew on razor blades. If you value your life so low then just go on ebay and buy a second hand one.

Try looking ant Dennis Kirk online. Take advice though, a helmet is no place to get cheap, unless you don't value your head and if thats the case, just don't wear a helmet.

do yourself a favor and dont scrimp on safety. motorcycle helmets are not cheap for a number of reason the biggest of which is the amount of research and development that goes into them to prevent your head from being damaged in an accident. the second thing is the amount of liability insurance the helmet manufacturers are required to carry on each helmet because people like you who wanted the cheapest one they could find, successfully sued the manufacturer for marketing an unsafe product, even though the helmet met the safety standards of the time.

You are putting a price on your head!
Stop it now!!
Different brands will suit your shape head.
I worked this out years ago and I 'am saving you some money by telling you this.
Try different brands as they all fit differently and then look at your colours and patterns! You may have to order it in.
If you are in the states, do you guys have American standards that are endorsed by safety organisations?
In Australia we have AS, Australian Standards and they are on anything that is endorsed safety wise!
We can get helmets from as low as US100.00 with the standard on it but they are very basic and you feel it in the comfort of the liner. Some you wouldn't be able to wear for more than an hour before dying from a severe migrane!
Thats the difference!

No such thing. A good helmet isn't cheap. A cheap helmet isn't good. Do you have any clue why you wear a helmet? It's to protect your head! You only have one head! Is it worth more than $30 or $40 to you? You don't have to spend $300 to get a good helmet, but you'll spend $150+.

You can't buy a good motorcycle helmet for cheap. The best you can do is buy a cheap motorcycle helmet for cheap.

Look in the yellow pages for a used motorcycle shop and call them and see what helmets they have for around $100.

And, don't come crying when it doesn't get you the best protection if you get in a wreck.

The reason they are expensive is they are protecting your brain and you get what you pay for. If you want a cheap helmet look in the motorcycle section of your local newspaper and hope for one that is the correct size (doubtful) and will have what you want for style and accessories.

If you care about your life and are serious about protection save up the money and buy a new one that will fit correctly and be current in safety.
