here's little trick i learned in my early radio daze...put a picture if yer signifcant other (or yer mom or dad) on the boatd in front of you...then present yer delivery as if you were actually talking to that person...
and learn how to put that 'smile' in yer voice evertime you crack the mic...cuz nobody really wants to listen to a crabby announcer...

The advice that helped me the most when i was starting out was to pretend I was talking to just 1 person, kind of a one sided conversation. I still follow that advice! Also, was told by one vet that if someone asks you to say something in "your radio voice" and it's different from how you sound in normal conversation... you're doing something wrong. :-)
also, if you are reading news... check out the free information at www.sayitwell.com Some very good advice. I also advise marking your copy and practice practice practice.

Yeah, just use your normal voice. Using a voice that is different from your own is called "vomiting" in the industry. We've all heard the DJs on the air who sound "too DJish". That is "vomiting". Some advice, no major market station isnt going to hire a screamer or a person who vomits. So, just use your normal voice.

I agree with the guy who puts a picture of his significant other, although I personally use a picture of Paris Hilton. When recording things I actually begin everying by saying "Hi, (text)" then edit the "Hi" out... that makes it feel more conversational when I talk. The biggest thing is to just use YOUR natural speaking voice... your natural voice is way better than a voice of you trying to be deeper than you are.

1. Every time you open that mic, act as if you are talking to only one person.
2. Be yourself.
3. Always have fun. You're not getting paid a lot, but if it's not fun, it's definitely not worth it.
