will the fish outgrow the pond or adapt to its size

That's almost a trick question. The fish will stop growing on the outside ( getting any longer" if kept in a pond too small for them. This does not stop them from growing on the inside. Their organs will continue to grow. This process is commonly called stunting and will lead to an early death of the fish. So yes and no if the answer. They will appear to stop growing, but will suffer badly for it.

If your pond is too small for Koi, you might consider fancy goldfish. They will handle the same environment and will not get as large as Koi.

I've had a 200 gallon patio pond for 2 years. There are 6 koi and six goldfish thriving and growing. The two largest koi are probably 18" long and fat. I've got a couple of goldfish nearly as big. I also have 2 goldfish 7" long that were born in my pond less than a year ago. The size of the enviornment will regulate the growth of the fish. Fish who have stopped growing will resume growing when placed into a larger 'world'.

Your best bet is to do an internet search about koi, there's so much information to learn about them. They aren't very easy to have and they're very expensive. I can't tell you the calculation of how many koi to the size of your pond, but if you have too many in a confined place, although they won't "outgrow" the pond, they will suffer health-wise and you'll also have to deal with a pond that will be hard to keep clean. I've done the koi thing twice before I finally decided to keep fancy goldfish that have the same colors as koi. Best of luck!

koi can get over three feet and can live for half a century or more. they require a pond size of ate least, at LEAST, 1,000 gallons to suit ONE for life.
don't listen to anyone who will tell you that they only get as big as the tank/pond allows. it's total bs.

with koi a pond is hard to clean because unlike regular fish with their neat little strings of poo, koi have almost diarrhea like feces that will clog filters and is not nutritious for bottom feeders because it floats.

The adapt to their surrounding size.

If it's new, then I suggest buying lily pads and letting them sit in the water for a week or two before buying fish.

It gets the environment ready.

kois will grow up to 24" ( if they live long enough and are in good care) so i think they'll outgrow it.
