Instead of distance measurements, use time. Swim continuously for 30 minute intervals at a medium pace. Or swim a 2-minute hard, 2 minute easy interval or something of the like. Use a digital watch to keep track.

You can also do distances by using sight points or immobile objects on the shoreline like tall trees, a rock, a water tower or anything you can see from the lake. Time how long a distance takes you to swim at a normal pace. Work on covering the same distance in a shorter period of time.

Be sure you know the lake well, that there is someone there with you or someone who knows where you are, that you know what the currents are like and that you are familiar with the depths and hazards of your lake bottom. It is very important that you be aware of your surroundings when swimming in a lake or any body of open water.

Have fun!

I am a nationaly ranked swimmer, I think that you should just swim across the lake because the only time i swim in lakes is when i do triathlons. swimming just back and forth along the shore wouldn't be so bad eaither.

Did you ever think of getting a row-boat? Those will work you out great and if you have a lake you've got room to give it a good go.
