Go to Auto Zone or something similar to that. Let them check it with the computer to get the code and let them look it up for you.
It is probably your O2 sensor or EGR valve.
Had that happen to me.

Disconnect your battery for a few minuites and that should reset the system and the light, but when you do this your car has to re-learn it selt (ALSO: if you have a radio keycode take a note of it as you will need to re-enter when you reconnect the battery and you will also lose any presets on your radio). While this is not a problem it can take up to 500 miles for it to complete. If the light comes back on take it to a garage and have a code scan done so you what the car is upset about and help it help you locate the fault.

Get a OBD II scanner (40 bucks on ebay). You can check the code and turn it off.

I had one give me a Check Engine light and it was just that I didn't tighten the gas cap.

THey are picky. Also Auto Zone will tell you if you bring the car there.

You'll have to take it in. It's probably some vacuum advance line or EGR valve. Something to do with the emmissions control system. That's why it won't pass smog and that's why the light is on.

There is probably some other problem with the emission system. It will give a code to tell you whats wrong but you have to know how to read it or let somone tell you how. If you go to an auto parts store ask the person there about reading the code for your car
