You feel closest to living when you feel you have a purpose in life and you know you are following it.And during the course of this journey some important things to fuel your purpose will be love(that is the love that you show on others and the love that you get in return),politeness, making others happy in the best way yiou can and of course a smile on your lips each day of your life. This will keep you exuberant each moment of your life and you will feel much more than 'just' closest to living-you ll feel that this is heaven.
As for dying...........when you are actually living,I don't see how you can experience anything closest to dying.Because you will actually be living you know!!!
I suggest you read the book called "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" by Robin Sharma. Please do not think I am advertising the book or something, but it is just that I read the book and many things were clearer to me.

I feel closet to living when I really am being myself. When I don't feel pressured by myself or anyone else to do something or be something that I have no idea how to be. I feel myself when I try things out for my own and explore by myself instead of being led by the hand or pushed by it as well.

I feel closest to dying when I am not being myself. Part of me is dying when my vision gets blurry and view of myself starts getting manipulated by outside forces or by myself. I really hate when I lose myself but I think that when I lose myself I realize why what I lost or took for granted was so important in the first place and then I get better value myself when I find my way again.

I feel closest to living when I am playing and singing

I feel closest to dying just before I sneeze (they say that a sneeze is the small death. There's something else that they say is a small death as well, but we won't go there)

I feel closest to living when I see my children running around and laughing and playing. Metaphorically speaking I feel so alive when I am with them and I feel so blessed and happy. At the same time, as my children grow older so do I. I can see my own mortality getting closer as the years go by. But from a religious stand point , when our physical body dies our spiritual soul goes on living.

HaHa. You are kidding, right?

From my experience, you feel closest to living when you are close to dying. Nothing like having your heart shut off in the middle of the night to get you wanting to go on living - real bad.

I was in the hospital with my first heart attack. The worst was over and I was laying in CCU watching an old re-run of Wagon Train. I felt the veins and arteries in the back of my hands relax and flatten out. I looked back over my head to see the heart monitor. It wasn't entirely flat line. The P waves continued to bounce, but there was no circulation. My vision began to turn blue and change to tunnel vision when nursey hit the door. Right then my heart started beating again. She said I had made all their alarms go off in the nurses station. I apologized and said I would try to sleep so I wouldn't bother them again. She said, "Go to sleep, but don't sleep too deep." Good advice there!

The next day, they did a CABG x 5 on my little ticker. That was 14 years ago next August 3rd. Kinda my new birthday if you see what I mean.
