What good will the computer be if you remove your hard drive? You should just do an unconditional format on your hard drive, repartition it, then install a simple basic program, like windows 3.1. If the charity wants to, then let them go and install an updated version of windows, that way, you've accomplished three goals.... One you unconditionally formatted your hard drive, two if someone was to try and recover what you had on your hard, they can't because you've already overwritten it by installing Windows. And third, but not least, you're helping out a charity.

It's basically the hard drive(s) you need to be worried about, as they contain data over the long-term. You don't really need to remove it, unless you actually want to keep the hard drive. You just need to securely wipe the hard drive. There are several pieces of software out there that offer this wiping feature.

I've been using Dban (both as a secure wipe and a general purpose wiping tool). It's free, and works well. http://dban.sourceforge.net/

It's important that you don't just format. You need a proper wiping tool, that can write over all data, and wipe the partition tables as well. Something like Dban will do.

not really - but its a bit harsh giving them a PC without a HDD - get an old win95 / win98 disk then boot it up with the disk in there. When it settles down and gets to a commmand prompt type in FDISK then delete the partitions - this should remove all data and OS.

I check with my hubby and he said once you remove the hard drive [ re place with a new one ] you have cleaned out everything.
Try checking your local schools they are always looking for computers and key boards. You may want to look into the women's shelters they could use computers too.
