I think it was the day that Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer. I know it was late on in June 1981, so would think that was it. Hope this helps.
Edit: Sorry it was 29th July 1981, got my months mixed up. Close though!

The only thing I could find that was somewhat interesting about that day is that the James Bond movie "For Your Eyes Only" premiered, and I could not find out too much about that. Must have been a slow news day.
