Polonium was discovered by Pierre and Marie Curie. Marier Curie was a native of Poland, hence she named this new element after her homeland.
The main reason that it is toxic is because it is highly radioactive.

Marie Curie isolated it from pitchblende and named it after her native land, Poland. It's radioactive which makes it toxic.
