Several of the answers are there for you in other replies. Piercing cartilage is a little more painful but not significantly so. This type piercing should not be done with a gun due to possibility of damage to surrounding cartilage areas. It should only be done with a piercing needle by a qualified piercer.
The main issue in piercing cartilage comes with the lack of blood supply to the area. The healing process is certainly slower but if the area ever gets infected the process of antibiotic therapy is diminished because of the lack of blood vessels carrying antibodies.
To maintain a piercing of this type takes very meticulous care of the area.

Yes it does hurt, especially if you do not have it done correctly.
Most places will want to piece it with a gun, DO not have it pierced that way. You can damaged the cartilage leading to infection and further discomfort.
If you do want to peirce your upper ear, go to a proper piercing place and have it done with a hollow needles. It is more expensive however safer and it will heal much better.

Don't worry! It doesn't hurt at all. Just feels like a small pinch. And after it just feels a bit warm/itchy but will go away. The only time it might hurt is when you try take it out when it's not ready.(:

i just my cartilage pierced nearly 2 months ago. its a little painful when you get it done. you just have to be careful for a little bit when sleeping on that side, brushing your hair, and stuff. it hurt for a little while after too, but now i have no pain whatsoever.
so it may hurt for a little bit, but stick it out cuz it looks real good and its worth it.

there's cartilage in your ear, no bone but yes it will start to sting more, because once you get closer to the nervous system it will tend to hurt! I got mine done and it hurt and was sensitive but i got over it! it looks really pretty after!!
but it's up to you!
Good Luck!

Yes -- any piercing will hurt some, but the closer you get to the cartilage (or into it), will be more painful.
