Sounds like there is a conflict with the drive with another drive.
Was the drive originally installed by Dell or added on later? If it's an older machine it used the older PATA format and you must be sure that one drive is set as master and another as slave with jumpers on the back of the drive. If both jumpers are set as master you will get the problem you are seeing.

Calm down, Dell is OK, the support just sucks. Since it is drive F, I am assuming you have 2 hard drives or a partition? Take off the side, make sure both optical drives are on the same cable. On the back {if PATA} set both jumpers to cable select. Remove the power cord before beginning. Get that done, boot into the BIOS (usually f2} and see if both optical drives are recognized.

Dell tech support has to be tricked to get it working. Its most likely a hardware problem. This can happen if you use Roxio products and another burning product like nero (or sometimes iTunes). You can try uninstalling the burning software if you have a copy to reinstall. Uninstall, reboot and see if it works.
Another thing to check is if the cables are secure inside the computer. If they are loose, it might not work.
It's possible the drive failed though. If that is the case, you can buy a new one online for $30 at sites like newegg.com, etc. Retail stores sell them for around $60. If your dell is in warranty and they put it in, make them send you a drive.

You should have a Degauss option in the monitors OSD menu. Try hitting that a few times. However, you will need to wait about 20 minutes between cycles for the degauss circuit to reset properly. If that is not having an effect then take the monitor to a TV repair shop and they will be able to use a much more powerful degauss wand or ring on it. It will take about 30 seconds to fix. I would strongly advise against strapping magnets to a drill. That looks like a good way to get a magnet embedded in the wall, or even worse in you.

Take the sata cable out of the back of the dvd drive. It is the long one that spans the middle of the back of the cd drive. Also take the power plug out of the back. The next time you plug it in and turn the pc on you should see in the bottom right that it is detected new hardware and such. If that doesnt happen then the drive is dead or malfunctioning.

I suspect one of the secondary IDE channels is disabled in the BIOS
hit f2 when at the dell startup splash screen, then use the arrow keys to move down to the ide devices then look to see if both secondary ide channels are enabled
k, need to know a few things first...
1) do you have more than one cd rom?
2) did it ever work at any point?

You can fix it by not ever buying a Dell again. In the meantimes, you might want to try reloading the drivers, or replacing the drive. Both cheap and easy fixes.

Well, what I would do here is to make sure that the F drive is installed properly. Use the manual to guide you through the process.

you probably need to get the driver for the drive. Check what kind of dvd burner you have...and check if the driver for it is online...or if you have the install disk it will be on there. Hope that helps
