I love my boyfriend. He loves me. Here is the problem: he is from Jordan and lives there, but he is here this summer. Everything was great at the beginning, but a week ago his father called him to tell him to come home. Why? Because he wants my boyfriend to marry his cousin in an arranged marriage.

My boyfriend broke the news to me about 3 days ago. He spent the days before that calling and pleading with his father to reconsider, since he is in love with me. His father is not moved. Even worse, my boyfriend’s sister is getting married and she is only 17. My boyfriend loves her very much and wants to do everything to stop the wedding. His father has said that he will stop the wedding if my boyfriend comes back and gets married. Also, if he does not go through with his own wedding, he is disowned.

My boyfriend feels utterly defeated. He has given up, but I don’t want to yet.

I am heartbroken. I want to marry this boy, I don’t want him to marry his cousin.

A my advice would be not to marry this man it sounds like he comes from a culture were women are used like door mats, bought and sold like goats and camels his father says he has to marry his cousin so his father is a control freak and your boyfriend is his fathers son so some of his fathers traits may not come out until later on.. be very careful with this kind of man.

Too bad you didn't see this one coming.

As hard as it is, I would just let it go. You won't be happy in the end if you marry him. He will hold this against you. You say that your boyfriend has given up, which means he doesn't want to be disowned by his family. I think that's your answer right there.

One of the benefits of the Nuclear Family is that we take control of our own lives. Your boy friend will have to decide if he has the strength to go against the was he was raised

I hate to live where you're from because this is utterly ridiculous.

If he loves you he will decide what is more important, you or being disowned
