Since Harry is good he actually doesn't want to kill anybody. If you remember in the 5th book when Harry met Belatrix Lestrange the woman who killed Sirius Black, Harry tried to form the torture curse (crusiatus). When he couldn't preform it Belatrix said that you had to mean the curse, you have to want to cause them harm. You have to mean all of the unforgivable curses you try to cast.
But on the off hand, i do agree, harry is a pussy and so are his spells. the only one that he knows that's any good is the one that bloodied Malfoy in the bathroom.

I don't know if you've noticed, but although Harry has the potential of becoming a very powerful wizard, his own schoolwork, with the exception of Defense Against the Dark Arts, is pretty average (too much extra-curricular saving of his friends and himself from death in every book and film so far)---As others have noted, Harry defends, rather than attacks--but his defensive spells are darned good---The Patronus spell is one of the most powerful and difficult of spells to master, yet Harry has nearly perfected its use---Harry has definite leadership skills, and is, by The Order of the Phoenix, a teacher of magic in his own right.
Not too shabby for a kid who's been abused nearly all his life, wouldn't you agree?

That was only in the movie. In the book, he used a flashlight to write his History of Magic essay. He may not have gotten into trouble because the use of the spell may have also been for homework. He was practicing the spell from a book.

I think the same thing all the time. And another thing: Why doesn't he just whip out a handgun and pop a cap in Voldemort's fatass? But nooooooooo he has to disarm him first instead of like shooting him with bolts of lightning or something!

J.K. Rowling is a miserable and evil little tart. She's going to kill Harry. I've wondered the same thing about Harry's spells for a long time. He's "the boy who lived" and all that jazz. He was built up in the first book to be among the most powerful wizards blah blah. Let's face it, J.K. Rowling's a crap writer.

Because in Real Magick, you are only supposed to use the minimum spell needed for the desired effect, Dark arts practitioners go for the overkill factor, that is what makes them evil.

Yea i've noticed that... it's just like Star Wars... the good guys disarm, and defend, whilst the bad guys attack.
Dunno, maybe its just the mentality that good people protect good and bad people are the aggressors, causing trouble
