lol Just want to correct a misconception. Captain Jack Harkness is not gay. He's omnisexual; and is interested, apparently, in people of all sexes and species. John Barrowman, who plays him, is gay, and happily civil- partnershipped (My word that sounds crap - happily as-married-as-the-law-currently-allows...y'know what I mean).
As a happily married straight guy I can't necessarily answer this question from an entirely personal perspective, but trying to be as objective as possible - the Doctor is a very damaged, very hurt person, who's always in some kind of trouble, though that does give life with him a certain frisson. Jack tends to let life flow over him rather more, and can be tremendous fun. Plus the accent is fantastic. Only thing is, trying to be the SINGLE significant other in Jack'e life probably wouldn't work; after all, he is the guy for whom even "Hello" is flirting ;o)
I'd say if you're looking for something long-term, go Doctor. For the experience of a lifetime, go Jack!
