Because nobody wants to be number 0, think about it. Would you want to be number 0. However, eventuallly they will have to, or else everybody will be in double digits.
Just imagine what will hapen when all double digit numbers are retired, and next up, number 102.

Zero has been used -- Al Oliver that I can think of -- but in baseball it has been pretty rare. For a team as steeped in tradition as the Yankees, and (make no mistake) a team that always keeps one if not two eyes on the marketing of the product, having a player wearing #0 is the sort of thing that would be Not Done by the Yankees.

Hey, some people like to be #0. Look at Gilbert Arenas in the NBA, he wears #0 and he's one of the best in the league.
