I want to skip all those group classes and get my kids into some private swim lessons. Just wondering about how long it would take?? They are 2, 3.5 and 5 yrs old.

I've been swimming ever since I was 4 and to be honest it took me a while to really develop how to swim. Some kids were absolutely fine in the water and could dive right in on some of their first tries when we were learning how to do dives off the gutters in the pool (it was a short walled pool) but I couldn't really get the hang of it so well. I'd say if you go straight for private lessons it might take about a year or 2 before you really see improvements and even then your children will likely have some more to go before they're really good. But once they get technique down they can also go into more advanced swim stuff like signing up with a USA Swimming registered swim club, this way they can compete in various meets and even some higher competitions.

If your children are ready to learn it could take as little at 3 lessons for them to be moving independently. It could take as many as six lessons for them to learn to float if they are not ready. Swimming is a very indiviual case scenario. Private lessons are a great way to learn because the focus is on your children only. Once the instructor does a primary elavuation of their abilities he or she will be able to estimate how long it will take before your children will be swimming. Without seeing them or knowing their current skill level it is hard to determine a timeframe.

Good luck!

It depends on the kid. I know when i was a kid i would not get in the water at swim lessons. Then one day i just jumped in the water and swam across the pool and now I am a nationaly ranked swimmer in the USA. Depends on the kid.

30 seconds to 2 weeks, depending on the teaching style.
