While in Washington DC itself, since the president is not a legal resident of Washington DC, he cannot have any firearms on his person within Washington DC. If he were a resident of Washington DC, he could carry, while on the grounds of his personal residence (and probably the Whitehouse), a shotgun. Handguns are illegal in Washington DC (unless you are really old and already have a handgun registered pre-1977 in Washington DC).
While within the confines of the Pentagon, or while officially in military dress, the President can carry any military issued weapon, since he is the Commander in Chief of all armed forces within the US. If Washington DC were to be put under Martial Law, the President could then carry any military issued weapon anywhere within DC.
Outside of Washington DC, he is just like any other citizen and can carry any weapon that is legal for the state he is in, as long as he follows their rules, unless he is acting in capacity as the Commander in Chief of the military, in which case he can wear any military weapon he desires.

That's actually an interesting question. I don't know what the rules are regarding people carrying weapons inside the white house. I would imagine that they would not be able to be armed, not because they don't have the right to be armed, but because the rules concerning their safety prohibit it. It would be the same as someone legally owning and carrying a gun but being unable to carry it on a plane or within a courthouse.

It would depend on the juristiction he was in and what their regulation are.
I'm assuming you are referring to a concealed side arm, not all states have concealed carry and there are restrictions even in the states where it is available. For instance you can't carry it into a courthouse, a church or a bank, things like that.
There are special regulations state to state that allow people like law enforcement or parole officers to carry,
My hope would be that the president, who ever it is, could pass the background check!

i think he could carry a hid weapon. yet, there may well be little element to it. If he have been to ever demonstrate it or use it, it would undermine people's self belief. besides he travels everywhere in a "bubble" of protection, observed by using the main suitable and brightest interior the protection employer. As for being commander in chief, he's decidedly a CIVILIAN. the seen civilian administration of the defense force is foundational to the rustic. In different words, he could no longer declare his place as commander in chief through fact the inspiration for wearing a weapon. His place as head of state needs to succeed. He does not carry a weapon.

I think the question should be moreso 'Should the president own a firearm'?
As far as I am concerned, no, he shouldn't. I don't think any civillian should be able to carry a firearm.
That is clearly the reason that the US has more violent crimes ending in death than other Western countries.
That has me thinking now, imagine George Bush with a firearm ... That is a very unpleasant thought ...
Actually, any thought containing George Bush is quite unpleasant!

Actually, the president and all legislators are not able to be arrested and charged with alot of crimes because it would allow law enforcement to influence them. At least that was my understanding of things. The President would have to be impeached from office before he could be tried for a crime.

Geez! The way George W. Bush shoots himself in the foot all the time, he'd probably kill somebody (or shoot himself in the head trying) if he carried a fire arm!!
Look what Cheney did with a shotgun!! -RKO- 06/26/07
