How did WWE put together a 3 hour tribute show after having cancelled the original 3 hour show dedicated to the presumed demise of Vince McMahon? WWE had just a couple of hours to put together a tribute to Chris Benoit and cancel a stadium full of people, how did they do it?

Pretty simply. Most of what you saw last night was on the Chris Benoit DVD. The rest was very recent footage they had on hand, or guys paying homage. Not too difficult to put together at all from a production standpoint.
As far as the show getting cancelled, they simply don't let anyone in the gate...

They've put together last-second shows before.

Remember when Austin left the WWE the first time? Basically, during the last show, he had signed a contract with then-co-owner Ric Flair that if he threw one punch in the match or lost, he would become Flair's personal assistant and have to wear a dress.

Austin's then-wife, Debra, discovered that the contract was that the "person who lost" would become the winner's personal assistant and wear a dress.

Austin won, but hated the story idea.

The original plan was for segments throughout the night to show Austin acting like Austin, while Ric Flair in a dress (and not those crazy gowns he wears to the ring, mind you) waited on him as a personal assistant. However, Austin left an hour before the show began and refused to return, even after J.R. called him.

This threw a lot out of whack. The last-second story idea was Vince being angry at Flair and winning back the other half of WWE from him in the main event and Flair becoming just a wrestler again.

Austin, however, did not return to WWE for quite awhile.

WWE had to do what no other company has ever done before: cancel the whole night by devoting a memorial tribute to one of its own. The WWE did the right thing by not using last night's continuing storyline on the alleged death of the fictional character, Mr. McMahon & instead, devoted its entire three-hour broadcast to pay tribute to Chris Benoit & his 22 year history he left behind. And I'm pleased that Vince McMahon did make an appearance last night as his real self & not his fictional character role to pay his respects & to offer his condolances to the remaining Benoit family & his loved ones. The WWE did it well & suceeded without hesitation with its entire program last night.

It amazing what can be done in a short period of time. They probably turned people away at the door as they showed up at the arena.

This is not the first time that on only a few hours notice, they were able to put together a tribute. All the tapes are in some kind of order. It's not that hard.

I think some of the matches shown last night were from Benoit's DVD set that was released in 2004 and the others were more recent so they were easier to put together. I'm sure the fans were stopped at the doors and told that the show was canceled due to Benoit's death, but yeah I'm sure they were putting things together quick.

It's not that hard for them, really. They have a huge archive of clips and people who know where to get the best Benoit matches in that. That's what they did.

Interview/comment segments are fairly easy to improvise; for those, they used guys who were largely obvious choices, and all are affiliated with the company. (Though I don't understand why Flair wasn't called on for a few words on Benoit's run as one of the Four Horsemen.)

If they had had more time odds are they'd have included live matches - just think back to the Eddie tribute.

It's somebody job at wwe in public relations to come up with emergency clips, biographies such as last night. Since the match last night was in texas (cst) they got the news of Chris family in Gergia (est) an hour early. Vince taped his part before the arena was full.

Media...and the production crew has access to all the matches of all the wrestlers, so its not really all that hard...They pulled all of Benoits matches off the shelf and put the best ones together for the tribute...

They must have found out and turned everyone away, other than the 3 annouce teams, etc. Old videos are easy to find, thye have a huge library. That did seem a little too convienent, but it could have been one of those times that they simply could not have put on a show (as they did with Owen, etc).

They heard about it on the saturday one day before the ppv but did not release the details to the public. They also have a very big and professional video production crew, it would not have taken long to put together 3 hours of footage and interviews to replace RAW which was sceduled monday evening.
