Why do we need the government to pass laws instead of allowing business owners to make their own decisions? Why is my health so very important to the government? We are all here a very limited time anyways, should we not be happy and be able to pursue happiness?

For example, do we really need a law that prevents smoking in public? NO! Why not allow individual business owners decide that for them selves? oh the workers, well if there are non smoking establishments and smoking establishments alike, the employee has the freedom to choose where they want to work. Did you know that they were considering banning trans fat next....then what butter....all peanut products because a few have allergies....bees so on do you get the picture?

Some people on here might disagree with me, but I believe it is the government's role and purpose to enable as many of us to be able to take care or ourselves and our families by creating conditions that enhance, rather than repress, success in everyday life. However, the government often creates conditions where success is unlikely for large groups of people. By success, I mean achieving a decent standard of living, and being able to contribute something positive to your community. From the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, it has been business's goal to make the maximum amount of profit in the shortest period of time, and damn your customers and your community. Conditions could easily be created that allow everyone to participate in their community, and not just allow business to repress their employees and their customers with low wages and crappy products. Why not? Because business runs the government, not the other way around. People just get left out, over and over again.

Business owners are corrupt and it is always in the name of a buck. Yes the government ought to have social programs, but there needs to be reform in who gets what and for how long. All of us pay taxes (unless a business falls into "zero taxation") and therefore the government owes its citizens SS benefits at retirement. The govewrnment has withheld money from the employees check and if they fail to provide SS benefits at retirement that, my dear is FRAUD! It is true that the government wants to "look accountable and responsible" in their day to day business, have robbed the SS financial accounts for a long time and now the baby boomers want to see exactly what happened to their benefits. SS benefits were NEVER meant as the only retirement account a person should ever have.
You talk about health and wonder why the government thinks it is important - well it is - of course, if you want to give up your good heath to someone not so fortunate - that's your business.
The government ought to have nationalized health care for each and every citizen in America, paid directly by taxes collected through the IRS. Right now we have 50 million people without health insurance - I AM ONE OF THOSE.
Quit gripping - big business is not the answer most American voters are seeking!

your questions are too diluted and almost not related so letls go one by one: 1. the general public feel the gov is responsible to take care of us because WE elect and pay and them to do so. 2. The general public is MORE than business owners. 3. HELLO... a country without healthy people is bound to become a sick country, exactly not a goal as a nation. 4. Frankly, I don't undersand the point of this question.... should we not be happy b/c of the limited time, should we not be happy because of the goverment passing laws affecting business owners decision making process, should we not be happy because the goverment cares for our health. Should not we be happy because I just realized you wasted our time of being happy.

Business would sell you, me, your aunts, uncles, hairdresser, personal fitness instructor, guy who mows your lawn, his aunt, his uncle, his hairdresser. and anybody they every knew, except for a conservative elitist or CEO ... all down the river in order to make a buck. Indeed they would sell America to the devil himself if it yielded good stock gains.

This is a nation of people, not corporate profiteers. It is the government' s responsibility to keep the corporate raiders from carpetbagging and hauling off every thing of value to the top 1 or 2 % of this country. It is imperative that there be restrictions on what big business can and cannot do.

If you believe otherwise, why don't you just dig deep into your bank account and write a bunch of big, fat checks to the Exxon / Mobiles of this country, and give them your money directly. Believe me ... a large pecentage of that money will find it's way into that big secret vault in the Republican underground.

Well lets see if we left it up to business owners your environment would be very polluted with toxic chemicals, you couldn't take any prescription drugs without worrying if they would kill you. I suppose you would like to go to a doctor
that just says he is a doctor.

Yes let people whose only goal is to make as much profit as possible run things. Okay.

Some regulation is required otherwise people would take advantage. But I am sure you don't mind your children being exposed to lead paint or DDT or many of the other toxins that have been outlawed.

Because big business is trying to screw us. Looked for a job lately? They want you to be highly qualified, yet they want to pay as little as possible. That doesn't stop them from asking top dollar for their products and services though!

Government's reason for being is to protect us. Not just from criminals and foreign powers, but corporations too. Corporations only responsibilities are to their shareholders. That means that if they can make a profit by causing harm to you and your family, they will do it.

Why are you on the side of big business. If you are on here at 11 AM EST, you're doubtfully a CEO, VP, or maybe even middle management.

The government has a certain responsibility for its citizens, big business has no responsibility to its citizens.

How can we as a people tell someone that needs a medical procedure no? I believe in capitalism but personally am not willing to tell a child they cant have that procedure to prolong their life because his parents dont have insurance. Maybe you can do that, but most of us cant.

Because we pay taxes and let them spend it on whatever they want-we have no say in it. They should give us something, especially since the rich at the top don't pay taxes or pay very little.
