I agree with luminous regarding Gone With the Wind. Moby Dick, the "official" best according to the literary canon, belongs in the 19th century even though I like it. The Scarlet Letter is also a great novel from that century.
TG is right about The Old Man not being Hemingway's best. I think the committee of the Swedish Academy felt he deserved the Nobel Prize for his previous work, and gave to him when The Old Man came out, after several years of Hemingway not publishing a novel.
For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Sun Also Rises are his best novels.

I don't agree- it's without a question on of the best, but not THE best. I don't think you'll ever be able to define the best. Opinions differ too much, plus there are so many good books on equal footing out there. To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Moby Dick... these are all brilliant. Personally I like To Kill a Mockingbird the most. I almost cried when I found out it was Harper Lee's only novel.

It is a great novel, but I don't think it's the GREATEST novel. I will have to agree with some of the other answers on here. I think Gone With the Wind and Huckleberry Finn are better.

False.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the greatest American novel ever written. It was written by an American about America. It is still relevant and will always be relevant.

False. Yes, you should be required to read it in high school, but it isn't the greatest. I think To Kill a Mockingbird is the greatest American novel ever written.

there is no such thing as the greatest anything novel ever written. who decides? a bunch of stuffy academicians? people with no life that vote on the internet? politicians? teachers? a novel is the greatest novel ever written if you think so. personally i'd go for catcher in the rye... or... slaughterhouse 5 or... catch 22 or... dammm..... too many to choose from.
