I guess it depends on what sword you have in mind. If by chance you have in mind the sword of excullibur/arthur sword...etc I think you should secured license to own one. Ah since you are in England there are so many swords there that are for sale I bet, you shop around and you will find anthic shop that sell sword belonging to the middle ages sort of, but it is just a counterfeit or a bogus copy of the original sword from a book. Well I guess if you are in England you don't need license to own a sword.

To own a sword as a collectors piece...as far as here in New York you don't need a license.

I have a collection of Japanese swords.

However if I were to carry one of them on my person in public, it will be considered an illegal weapon and I would be arrested. but this is in New York. I don't know how the laws are in the UK.

You don't need any form of licence. Providing the thing's a collector's piece or a training aid, that's fine. If you try to wear, carry or wave it around in public, that's an offensive weapon and your feet won't touch. If you're taking it with you to a training place, make sure it's properly cased.

As long as the sword is just ornamental, you don't need a licence. I have three Samurai swords in my living room and I bought mine through a catalogue. Nobody said anything to me about needing a licence.

Not to own one. But yes to carry one in public in some cities, etc. Just go to the police department and inquire.
