"Affirmitave action does not threaten me, it does however anger me. People should be able to stand on their own merits, it is not fair that a white person with better credentials gets turned down for something because the government says we need a minority to fill this space even if they are not as qualified as the other candidates. "
That was written by someone in this forum...my question is WHY DO THEY ASSUME THAT THE OTHER CANDIDATE IS NOT QUALIFIED, JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE A MINORITY?
That would be like hiring a butcher to be a surgeon just for the sake of following regulations...it makes no sense!

For the record, I'm against affirmative action myself...I'd rather succeed with my own accomplishments rather than listen to some whites complain about how it was "handed to me"...I just don't get why some of them assume they we are less qualified for jobs (even though we get the SAME training) just because we are minorities?

They don't assume the other candidate is unqualified. They're saying, "If, in the event this guy ISN'T qualified, then he or she shouldn't be hired over someone who is, based on skin color."
Obviously, if the minority is better qualified, they don't NEED affirmative action, since they have the skills and abilities to get the job.
Does that make sense?

It is easy for people who think they are superior to others to subjugate those who might threaten the status quo. Also, those who use this arguement fail to take responsibility for their own shortcomings, and refuse to even *think* that the white people who are not getting jobs just might not be as qualified as a minority. That type of thinking (that someone out there who is a minority might actually be better than them) would ruin their whole universe. It all boils down to racism and sexism (oh yes, these same people who are arguing don't realize that women are considered a minority), and Affirmative Action is just one attempt at trying to even the playing field. It is like a race, white males started running the races hundreds of years ago, and minorities were told to hold on, and wait. Now, they take away all the segregation and add women's liberation, and then tell minorities to "catch up" when white men are already 10 laps ahead of them. It is impossible to catch up unless provisions are made.

No the point is that a qualified person is qualified regardless of their race. The argument could work both ways and does in many instances i.e. a good student (black, Asian, white etc) doesn't get a scholarship because it is regulated to go to a minority of that school.

Anyone who is so racist and narrowminded to actually think that affirmative action is anything more than it is, a means to level the playing field in a nation dominated by racism and racist institutions is nothing more than a bigot. Wear your sheet with whatever passes for pride in the trailer park.

I agree with you to the fullest, and i wish it wasn't about color. However we live in this planet, and I'm sad to say that it comes down to people ignorance. In addition to that I wish like any other bad word, that the world minority would be abolish as well. Think about, eventually "brown" people will become the the majority, so would white people become the minority. I think not.

Affirmative action is an insult as far as I am concerned. I'm just as good as anyone else. I loathe the idea that I'd be getting a position just because of My skin color.

Affirmative Action was created so that the Majority will become angry and wants to ban it so that the government can create a number system instead of individuality to create their mass slave system.
It seems to be working and its very sad.
We should all be given an opportunity based on our unique features and what we can bring to this world.
