..I have 6 female wagtail platys, and they always seem to be hiding. If I look over at the aquarium, it seems empty - if I go right up to it, they usually come out (they think they are getting fed!)

They are always out at the top in the morning, and very active when I feed them, but once they've finished they hide away again...

They are often eating off the plants and gravel, but generally hiding.... is this normal behaviour for platys?

It seems like if you add more fish the platys would hide from them, but it is the opposite. More fish will help the platys gain confidence and assurance that there are no predators around. Find a good SMALL fresh fish breeder that has healthy community fish the same size or close to your platys, NOT A BIG CHAIN. Get a mix of calm fish that are known to swim mid-tank and top-tank.

The more fish in the tank, the more the platys will come out.

Maybe you could get more fish that swim on all levels. In my fish tank I have fish that swim along the bottom, the top and around the middle.

My platy's are normally sucking algae off rocks and plants and aren't scared at all apart from if there's aloud noise.

Fairly normal yes. If you have room to add a few more fish tot he tank it would probably make the Platys feel more comfortable coming out from hiding and you would see them much more often.

You sure you ain't got a hole in the tank with a direct route straight to the bright lights of Fishland?

why, yes it is... my platies also does that...
anyway, you got 6 females? give 'em 1 or 2 males, maybe they'll be more active, and they'll breed, and soon your tank won't be so empty! ^^

good luck
