To solve simple linear equations like this...
"Subtract" everything that doesn't have the factor (y) from both sides. If you're solving for some other variable, then put that variable in the parentheses.
Then "divide" both sides by the coefficient of (y)..
Example
4 - 7x - 3y=0... solve for y.
4 and -7x don't have any y factors, so "subtract" them from both sides
-3y = -(4-7x)
Now divide by the coefficient of y... in this case it's -3
y = -(4-7x)/(-3) = (4-7x)/(3)
So...
y = (4-7x)/(3)
If the equation is non-linear, then it's a little more complicated, but the process is pretty much the same.

-3x-y+9=0
add y to both sides:
-3x-y+9+y=0+y
-3x+9=y or, if you prefer y=-3x+9

-3x+y+9=0
-3x+3x+y+9=3x (add 3x to both sides)
y+9=3x
y+9-9=3x-9 (subtract 9 from both sides)
y=3x-9
