I back you up completely. I quit smoking 15 years ago so I have no dog in this hunt, but I've yet to see a definitive study showing that second-hand smoke definitely causes illness and death at all. There are so many other contributing factors that are not eliminated in the studies it is obvious that the results you hear posted in ads and in the news are slanted to get a particular agenda across. The thing about second-hand smoke is that it smells bad. That makes people on the receiving end of it uncomfortable and, thus, willing to believe any propaganda that is put out so as to justify their banning of smoking in public places. If it's so bad, then outlaw it. But, you see, they won't because the government and major corporations make a fortune off of the addiction of smokers.
I agree that smokers should use discretion when smoking and not to do it around children (if for no other reason than the bad example it sets) or around people that do not wish to breathe in or smell like smoke, but I think smokers are far from the ignorant, evil people the media and the peer pressure make them out to be.

Ruby, I'm a smoker. I have been for 40 years and believe me second hand smoke is really unpleasant to non-smokers.
Whether or not it causes cancer in those exposed to it is secondary but think of it, if you had a new little baby, would you take a chance and smoke around her or would you stay on the side of caution and go outside to smoke.
I see all these guys with their barbecues going and the smoke just pouring off the grill and those guys have their heads right in there but they raise a fuss when someone lights up. Makes me wonder too.
I think we all agree that smoking does no one any good so just to be safe, let's give the non smokers a break and not impose on them.
Yeah, the food chain and the water could use a little work too but one thing at a time......they're working on that.

Oh really? What study? Who did it? When? How does that study negate the HUNDREDS of studies over the past 30 years, many of them recent as well, that suggest otherwise?
You are probably referring to the study done by Enstrom and Kabat. That is the most recent and extensive study that has made any suggestion that second hand smoke is not harmful. Two problems. First, that study did NOT find that second hand was not harmful. It just found that the estimates of its impact on heart disease and lung cancer was overestimated, and the methodology for this study has been challenged. Second... guess who funded that study? The tobacco industry.
Hmm...
Nice try, though.

First of all , who made this "very extensive study" ? When there is a contradiction between studies of anything, people always believe the one that best suits them.
I would guess that you're a smoker yourself. or you live with a smoker- - - but don't mind his smoke.
For myself, I don't believe or disbelieve either study. I'll wait for much more information. In the meantime, there is no danger in avoiding second hand smoke. There may be danger in inhaling it. Why take chances ?
" This is the real truth " ??? Maybe.

Did you ever watch the t.v. show Bull$hitt on t.v. They say the same thing. But when I am around people who smoke I cough, and I know of some one, who developed lung cancer, she never smoked a day in her life, but she lived with a person that smoked. I think you should as yourself, Would you let your newborn baby around someone who smokes? Why or why not?
I personally think everyone has the right to smoke or not, and businesses have the right to allow smokers in there establishment or not. And if you don't like the smoke, don't shop there, and tell the owner why you are not shopping there. Money makes the world go around.

I worked on intensive care units for many years. The many long term smokers that destroyed their lungs had family members who also frequented hospitals to be placed on ventilators until stable.
From a more personal perspective, my father smoked very heavy and my mom did not smoke at all. I spent the first twelve year of my life sleeping in an upright position on our couch with a jar of Vick Vapor rub in my hand putting it in my nose through the night trying to breathe. I was twelve when my dad died with complications from his smoking, but before that I also survived a car fire caused by his ashes blowing into the back seat of our car where my best friend and I tried to put the fire out with our drinks until he stopped the car.
Upon his death my breathing problems literally stopped over night. I missed him dearly, but being able to breathe and sleep in a bed at night lying down was quite a thrilling advent for me. I never smoked so the effects of his smoke was second hand.
The only positive thing I ever got from smoking is that it keeps intensive care units in heavy demand and I have always gotten all the over time I wanted to live comfortably.

I totally agree... I am a non-smoker, but those anti-smokers are a bunch of sissies and whiners. If you ban second-hand smoke then you should also ban perfumes, colognes, body odors, crying babies - everything that pollutes the air and irritates other people... Antismokers need to get a life and a job!

You must be a smoker.
Stop smoking "its injurious to your
health" and to the health of your neighbor.
Once I saw a TV programme showing the inside of
lungs and liver of people who smoke,
from that day (1997) I stopped smoking.
PS I even started saving money.
