This is one way to describe appeasement:
.... from the authoritative Encyclopedia of US Foreign Relations - is an objective description of appeasement as the term was used before the mid-1930s. Until then, we learn, it "primarily referred to timely concessions to disgruntled nations whose grievances had some legitimacy, in the hope of defusing difficulties and promoting peace and goodwill. Acting from a position of strength, the appeasing power was motivated not by fear or weakness but by a sense of statesmanship and a perception that limited concessions would not endanger its vital national interests."
So, the Western Powers thought that appeasing the Soviets would endanger their vital interests, which was probably the wisest thing they did or else all of Europe would have fallen into Soviet hands.

That would have altered our time-line dramatically. Would you want to live in a world where the Soviets were not held in check by western nations?
By holding the line at Berlin, western nations let the USSR know there was a limit past which they could not go. They held the USSR to the original treaty and didn't give them an inch more.
You realize, they could have pushed back and created another war. Now that would have made some interesting changes to history. Might have made the difference between the gains in space we made during the 1960s and never getting into space at all.

No. If the NATO nations had knuckled under with Berlin, it would have been that much easier to knuckle under to the Soviets in their westward expansion. The Berlin Airlift sent a clear message to Stalin and his cohorts that communism was not going to be allowed to spread without resistance.

No they shouldn't have. They had an agreement on how Germany would be governed after the war and the reconstruction.
If they had backed down there Stalin would have pushed his luck elsewhere taking more and more of Germany.
Remember he wanted global communism with himself as head honcho.

They already believed us to be weak and without resolve, giving in to them would have only reinforced that belief, and they would have been even bolder than they were.
