The Redwoods cover an area from Santa Cruz to the Oregon border. It's kind of hard to answer you question without knowing what part you plan to visit. The best groves are up past Eureka along the Avenue of Giants. You should stay in either Eureka or Crensent City, neither of those places are hot beds of nightlife. Other than visiting the groves, there really isn't much to do unless you plan to go on long hikes or camp out. If you visit one of the many websites for the redwoods, you can check out which trees are the "must see" ones.

The Great Redwood Termites are something amazing to see. THese insects are the ones who bored those tunnels through the base of some the trees where the road goes through. They are huge slimy termites, from three feet to six feet long, possibly the largest insects on earth. They can be found in the California Legislature, where you can see them, along with their close cousins, the Giant Urban Cockroaches, voting to raise taxes again and again. Dont get too close though, they may mistake you for a taxpayer, their main prey, and you could get eaten.
