I am making a dress for a wedding (maid of honor) and wanted to know if I can use a fabric not listed on the pattern. It says to use Shantung, brocade or taffeta.

Can anyone suggest other fabrics I could use?

You wouldn't be able to use something stretchy - it would affect the hang of the dress.

Other than that, yes you can use a different fabric.

Yes, you can. You should use another woven fabric, however, or a stable (non-stretchy) knit. The fabrics listed all have a stiffness and sheen, so when choosing your alternate fabric, you have to consider the effect you want to achieve. Crystalline is sheer, shimmery and has a stiffness similar to taffeta but needs to be lined. Peau-de-soie would work well. A softer, more flowing fabric, like a light silk or batiste, would change the way the skirt especially flows and drapes.

If you understand fabric, you may be able to get away with it. Those are all fairly stiff fabrics with no stretch.

I don't understand your question - if you don't have another fabric in mind, why are you looking to switch? Those are all readily available.
