Has anyone ever heard that in the late18th century that people sat up when they were sleeping b/c it was better for their health? I was watching Cities of the Underworld Monday 6/25/07 and they were in a bunker in Philidelphia at Fort Miffin. The guide said that the reason the beds were so short was not b/c the people were short but b/c they use to sleep sitting up b/c they thought it was better for their health.

yes, we got this extensively in school when doing history on the golden age. try picture googling 'beddenkast' its a built in closet bed, inwhich people used to sleep in a sitting position.

it was however very unsanitary. the beds were not easily cleaned, and dampness could invite all kinds of critters to your bed. one bug in dutch still thanks its name to this. its called a pissenbed (i think you can guess what it means)

Joseph Merrick, aka The Elephant Man used to sleep sitting up because if he were to lie down, he would wake up in excrutiating pain.
