A fiction would be something that has not happened. If you write about Hariet Tubman, that is not fiction. However, if you write about something like magic (Harry Potter for instance) that would be considered fiction. Hope that helps!

A work of fiction is a anything where all or or portions of the work do not really exist in the real world. Take "The Lord of the Rings" for example. It's fantasy, which is a type of fiction, and the story it tells never actually happened, though one may find similar events in the real world that may have inspired the events of the book. Also, the characters and certain races, such as Hobbits and Ents, don't exist (humans are the only race that does exist). "The Lord of the Rings" is an example of a work of fiction where none of the story truly exists in the real world, save for the existence of Human beings.

Now take "The Killer Angels" by Micheal Shaara, an example where portions of the story are fictitious. "The Killer Angels" is a work of historic fiction set during the Battle of Gettysburg. Now we know the battle occurred, so it's not fiction. The main characters are all historical figures who actually were present at the battle. Their not fictional, nor is their placement at the battle fictional. Events such as Pickett's Charge, the assault on Little Round Top, Buford's cavalry securing the high ground all existed. Again, their not fictional. But some of the characters (Buster Kilrain for example), some of the events can not be confirmed as being real (Kilrain isn't real), and most of the dialouge certainly is fictitous.

A book of fiction is any book that tells a story that never happened, and in many cases is never likely to happen, though works of fiction can mimic true life occurances or be inspired by true life (non - fictional) events.

Some examples include:
The Shining
The Grapes of Wrath
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
White Fang
