They are similar in that they both have four sides and their internal angles need not be right angles. In addition, in both cases one set of sides are parallel. However, in a parallelogram both sides are parallel to one another, while in a trapezoid only one set of the sides needs to be parallel.

The parallelogram and trapezium are both four sided figures.
The opposite sides of a parallelogram are equal and parallel.
The trapezium has one pair of opposite sides parallel.
A parallelogram has opposite angles equal.
