It should start to work within a day or so.

I'm 3 times older than you and it also sucks to have herniated discs on L1 throughL-5. I've had so many epidurals in my back and cortisone shots in my hips that I can't count them. I just had another set last week. It always takes me about 72 hours to feel some pain relief. Some of my shots didn't work at all, and some lasted four or five weeks, that's about all. Cheer up. You have youth on your side and you aren't full of cortisone which over the long haul can cause many other problems. Good luck.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. My husband has the same problem, upper and lower back, and he gets shots. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. He's better off if he rests on ice the day of the shot, seems to be more effective that way. But other than that, he's most comfortable if he stays fairly active, walks, swims, light exercise. He won't drink milk, but I think maybe more calcium and vitamin D in your diet would be beneficial also.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt.
Cortisone shots should take effect within a day or two of administration.

24-48 hours. are you just having one injection or a series of treatments? I have serious spinal problems-3 herniated discs to mention just some of the problems-and the pain is horrendous but cortisone worked better than anything else.if pain comes back and/ or worsens get to your doc. do not lift anything heavy, try and get physio. all the best for a speedy recovery: this problem with the right treatment can resolve itself/ be resolved. if you are overweight please try and lose weight. when acute inflammation has passed you can go swimming gently and walking is good too.

I just got one yesterday in my back. I had a facet block injection two weeks ago, and a transforamenal injection yesterday. My legs are weak and shaky and my lower back really hurting today. I tried to go back to work today but it was very uncomfortable to walk. Is this normal?

Ive had them, from the shot alone, you can be sore for up to three days, if it will work you should notice after that. also was it the type you were awake for or asleep, if you were awake, and have no relief, I highly doubt you will, asleep, it takes a couple days. I have buldging and herniated disks from l3-l5
good luck
