This can be a very discouraging phase, where you think you'll go in and have dialated 2-3 cm more and still be where you were last week. I do not think that your effacement could go backwards. What I think happens all too often is that the Doctors are in such a hurry that they just do a quick check...and then the next week if they find something different..the best they can do it double check it at that particular time because they cannot go back to the week before and see if they were accurate then. Just be reassured that you are 38.5 weeks. The latest my OB doctor will let a pregnancy go is 42 weeks, but if you feel miserable you can probably ask you doctor about induction. After you are at least 38 weeks it seems they are just about always willing to induce you if you want them too. Good luck...Get plenty of rest while you are waiting...You never know when you'll go into labor!!! And don't worry, I'm pretty sure you cannot go backwards...Just think about having that beautiful baby in your arms very soon :)

Your not actually even considered in labour till 3-4cm dilated. This is also referred to as active labour I think which means it's the real deal.
I know you just want bub out but sorry it still may be 1wk or even longer till bub comes. Ask your doc to explain, but your body is getting prepared, the cervix will be thining with each dilation, dilation can happen really slowly for some and especially for first time mums. I know was at 3 then checked 4 hrs later and only 4 cm.
This is why when bub's head comes it will push up then pop right back in and u think oh **** I've done all that pushing and the little bugger snuck back in, but every time bubs head comes up it stretches the entrance a little bit wider your body is now doing this to your cervix.
Good luck and rest now cause bub will keep u on your toes.

These measurements are all somewhat subjective. You Dr. will be happy to answer your questions, via his nurse. Give her a call. Far more importantly, know that it is very comman to feel tired and ready to pop! That baby will arrive when it is exactly the right time. I always had an incredible burst of energy for a day or two before going into labor. Good luck!

Checking dialation is 100% human, and humans have an error margine! Does not mean your Dr. is a twit, may be just has swollen hands, or your a bit swollen from all the activity..don't worry, your going to be a Mom soon!

Did you see different doctors? SOmetimes even teh same one will make the call different at different times. I know dilation can go backwards. I was 1 cm at 20 weeks with my second but few weeks before delivery I was closed completely.

Your doctor isn't a twit and this is completely normal. The baby and your body are just getting ready for the delivery.
Try to stay comfortable, well hydrated is important and sleep as much as you can, I know it is difficult at this stage.
Good luck and congratulations!!!!!!!

The doctor could have made a mistake, or the baby could have wiggled up a tiny bit. Don't worry; it sounds like your little one's ready to make their entrance very soon!
