People always like an expression of thanks.

There is no expectation.

A written note dropped in the mail that they can share with their family and staff would be nice.

Don't listen to some of these people complaining about realtor commissions. They obviously haven't been on the side where an agent get screwed by a buyer or seller and spent money on advertising or wasted time showing listings. Time is everything. But anyway, this is an easy question, If you want to..then do it. If it makes you feel better than do it. Don't do it if you're doing it out of a sense of obligation, then absolutely not. Realtors don't expect a thing from you, but it makes us all feel good when someone recognizes our efforts. Maybe the realtor gave you a really good experience and made you enjoy the whole experience. Whatever, do what your heart tells you to do. A realtor doesn't need a basket of suasage and cheese, even though it is the thought that counts. A sincere hand written letter to me, and a CC'd email to all your friends telling them how great I was and that they should use me next time would be the BEST gift you could give me. Congratulations on your home.

As a realtor, I NEVER expect a gift from my clients, but some have chosen to do so anyway. When I DO get a gift, I appreciate it very much, since it indicates to me that I did a good job for the client, and they are expressing their thanks to me.

A cute story for you. Eight years ago, I was handling the sale of the house of a somewhat elderly couple. We met often and regularly, since it was not an easy sale. As I visited with them, I became fond of their new puppy, which was an adorable Miniature American Eskimo.

Can you imagine my surprise when, at closing, they presented to me as a gift the litter mate of their little dog ?

I was nearly speechless, but cuddled the little fellow warmly in my arms and thanked them profusely. To this day, that gift still resides in my house and now I realize it was the very best gift I have ever received. I still remain in contact with this couple after all this time. We exchange holiday cards and pictures of each of our dogs.

Giving your realtor a gift is unncessary. They make good money on the transaction. I honestly think they should give you a gift. I come into contact with a lot of realtors in my line of work, and many of them give gifts to their customers. Their commission is 2-7% of the sales price per transaction. One of the realtors I know always gives her clients gift certificates for a local dinner cruise.

If you got good service, then a thank you gift is perfectly appropriate. We gave our realtor a gift certificate to a local restaurant.

Supposed to? No, I don't think so. All depends on the 'relationship' between you and the realtor.

You already did....it's called a commission check :).

If you liked working with the agent a Thank You note (with permission to use you as a reference) is far more valuable to the agent. A copy sent to the agent's broker is a nice touch.

You paid the agent a whole whopping lot of money and if you are really all that grateful, just mention their name and give them referrals. That's the gift that would make them happiest.

It is not inappropriate, but is not expected either; a heartfelt thank-you card is more typical. If you were particularly happy with the service and would like to express some appreciation, then by all means by a little something.

If you really like them, and if you think they did and exceptional job..then yes why not. But you dont have to do it. They thank you gift is a nice chunk of commission they are getting.

You will be giving a commission of about 6 to 10%.
Sure if you want to give more, you can. Most people think the comission is enough.
