My favorite is if your nose is itching, it means someone is talking about you. Don't know why, but I still beleive this.

My favorite old wives' tale is that if a pregnant woman sees something horrible or something that frightens her, it will "mark" the baby. Years ago, according to my family's stories, one of my grandmother's cousins dreamed that her husband lost an arm in a mining accident. She was pregnant at the time, and sure enough, the baby was born with only one arm. In this part of the country, if your nose itches, you're going to have company. If your ears burn, someone is talking about you. If your left eye itches, you're going to cry; if your right eye itches, you're going to be pleased. If your left hand itches, you will come into money; if your right hand itches, you will shake hands with a stranger. If your feet itch, you will walk on strange ground. There are tons more, but another time.

To the person above- that's not so much an old wives tale as common sense. If you fall asleep with gum in your mouth you will very likely choke on it.
If a broom falls, company's coming. Ring a bell to banish bad faries. If you sit in those dark circles of grass, you will get stuck in the fairy realm

OMG I was told about the watermelon seeds as well. I thought it was just my family. Although I won't go into the rest but being raised in the deep south grandparents and great grandparents were not racially sensitive back then.
I was also told the baby had to fall of the bed before they were a year old for luck..Luckily of my mine and my sisters did except for my youngest niece. right before her 1st birthday we were actually told to let her fall or she'd have an unhappy life. So at appease my grandmother we found a loop hole it it never said she had to hit the ground so we let her fall and land ever so softly on a huge pile of pillows.

People used to scare children into not crossing their eyes because they said if you get hit on the back while doing it, you'll stay like that forever.

This is crazy, but once I got older I realize my dad was trying to keep me from do this while I sleep...he would really convince me (because you know if daddy says it it's GOLDEN)...anyway he would say if you go to sleep with gum in your mouth your gonna die!" LOL

If you swallow chewing gum, it takes 2 years to digest.Oh and also if you sing before breakfast you will cry before dinner.
